If you could get outta here, would you do it?

In a final-round interview, the hiring manager, Priya, asks Jay whether he would leave his current company tomorrow if he could. Jay wants to answer honestly, keep the hypothetical tone she set, and use the same pattern to negotiate a realistic start date.

Why this conversation

If you could…, would you…? is the second conditional: if + past simple, would + base verb. The past form is not about past time; it marks the situation as unreal or unlikely right now. "If you could leave tomorrow, would you?" is a thought experiment, while "If you can leave, will you?" treats leaving as a real option. Outta is spoken "out of": say it, never write it in an email. The trap for Korean speakers is answering a could-question with "will"; the reply keeps the same distance, "If I could, I would."

Dialogue

Priya: Honest question. If you could leave your current company tomorrow, with no notice period, would you do it?

Jay: If I could, yes, but not because I'm running from anything. I'd leave because the next problem is bigger than the one I have left there.

Priya: What's left there?

Jay: A migration I'd like to finish. If I could hand it over cleanly in four weeks, would that work for your start date?

Priya: Four weeks is fine. Most people say "yes, tomorrow", and then I stop believing them.

Jay: If I said tomorrow, I'd be lying, so I'd rather promise a date I can keep.

If you could get outta here, would you do it?

**If you could…, would you…?**는 가정법 과거(second conditional)다. if + 과거형, would + 동사원형. "If you could leave tomorrow, would you?"는 사고 실험이고, "If you can leave, will you?" "If I could, I would."

Priya:

"If I could, yes… I'd leave because…"
"If I could hand it over cleanly in four weeks, would that work for your start date?"
