feel bad for somebody

Hana spent a week on a settlement report feature, and product pulled it the day before release because a partner changed its format. Jay hears about it in the kitchen and wants to say the right thing, since it was not her fault and not his.

Why this conversation

Feel bad for somebody is sympathy: their situation is rough and you feel it with them. It is not an apology and carries no guilt, which is what makes it safe to say when nobody did anything wrong. The trap is the preposition: feel bad about something is regret or guilt over your own part ("I feel bad about missing the review"). "I feel so bad for you" is warm and casual; feel sorry for is close but can sound like pity, so "for you" with "bad" is often kinder between colleagues.

Dialogue

Hana: They pulled the settlement report. The partner changed the file format yesterday, so the whole thing is on hold.

Jay: A week of work, the day before release. I feel bad for you — that one's nobody's fault, which somehow makes it worse.

Hana: Thanks. I keep wondering if I should have asked them about the format earlier.

Jay: You can feel bad about that if you want, but I wouldn't. They changed it after they signed off.

Hana: "Bad for" and "bad about" — different things?

Jay: Yes. "For you" is sympathy; "about something" is guilt. You get the first one, not the second.

**Feel bad for somebody**는 동정이다. **Feel bad about** something은 자기 몫에 대한 후회나 죄책감이다("I feel bad about missing the review"). "I feel so bad for you"는 따뜻하고 캐주얼하다. **Feel sorry for**는 비슷하지만 불쌍히 여긴다는 느낌이 날 수 있어서, 동료 사이에는 "bad"에 "for you"를 붙이는 쪽이 더 다정할 때가 많다.

Hana: "bad for"랑 "bad about"이 다른 거예요?

Jay: 응. "for you"는 동정이고 "about something"은 죄책감이야.

"I feel bad for you — that one's nobody's fault" — 위로하면서 책임 소재를 함께 정리해 상대가 자책하지 않게 한다.
"'For you' is sympathy; 'about something' is guilt."
