In a final-round interview for a team-lead role in Amsterdam, Tom asks Jay why he wants to leave a bank's blockchain unit after four years. Jay wants to describe the culture honestly without badmouthing his employer.
Why this conversation
Sedate describes a person, a place, or a pace that is calm, quiet, and unhurried, with a hint that it is also a little slow or dull. That double edge makes it useful in an interview: "a sedate place" is a fair description of a bank, not an attack on it. As a verb, to sedate someone is to give them a drug that calms them, which is where the adjective's sleepy undertone comes from. Applied to an office it does not mean drugged, and it is not "sedentary", which means sitting a lot.
Dialogue
Tom: Four years at the bank's blockchain unit. Why leave now?
Jay: It's a sedate place. Careful, well run, and a release every quarter. I learned to do things properly there; now I want to do them faster.
Tom: Sedate. Is that a compliment?
Jay: Half of one. Calm and dignified, but with a hint of slow. It's also what a dentist does to you before pulling a tooth, which is roughly how a quarterly release feels.
Tom: We ship weekly and it's rarely calm.
Jay: That's the trade I'm asking for.

Tom: sedate.
Tom:
Jay:
"It's a sedate place. Careful, well run, and a release every quarter."
"It's also what a dentist does to you before pulling a tooth" — 형용사와 동사가 한 이미지로 묶여 기억된다.
