Why this conversation
A major landowner is not just someone who owns land; "major" adds scale and local weight, wealth and influence, in one word. It is the neutral, adult way to introduce someone powerful without saying "rich": a major shareholder, a major client, a major landowner. "Big landowner" is the casual version. The trap is "large landowner", which sounds like a description of the person's body, and "landlord", which is someone who rents property out, a different role.
