Jay and Priya are in Tokyo for a conference and try to walk into a small izakaya near the Diet building. The host turns them away with a bow and a sentence in careful English, and Priya asks Jay what she just heard.
Why this conversation
Rent out is what the owner does: they let the place to someone else, so "we've been rented out" means the whole place has been taken by one party, not that the staff were hired out. Modern English says "booked out" or "it's a private booking tonight". The National Diet is Japan's parliament, from the Latin "dieta" for an assembly, nothing to do with food; "members of the Diet" are Japanese MPs. Jay should not correct a host's English on the spot, but he can use the natural version when he retells it.
