Jay ran a schema migration at six on Friday without telling the on-call engineer. On Monday morning Ken warns him that Lena, who owns the on-call rota, is about to read the alerts log. Jay knows a scolding is coming and has already posted a note owning it.
Why this conversation
Be in for it means you are going to be in trouble or punished, and it is usually said by someone watching ("You're in for it now!"). It is informal and often half-teasing. Do not confuse it with be in for something, which only says that something is coming, pleasant or not ("We're in for a long night", "You're in for a treat"). Jay can use it to tease a friend, or to admit "I'm in for it" when he expects an earful.
Dialogue
Ken: You ran the schema migration on Friday at six and didn't tell on-call? Lena's going to read the alerts log this morning.
Jay: I know. I'm in for it. I already put a note in the channel owning it before she asks.
Ken: "In for it" — meaning you're going to get an earful?
Jay: Exactly, in trouble and I know it. Different from "in for a long night", which just means a long night is coming.
Ken: So Friday you were in for a long night, and today you're in for it.
Jay: Both true. Owning it first is what makes the second one shorter.

**Be in for it**은 곧 곤란해지거나 벌을 받게 된다는 뜻으로, 보통 옆에서 보는 사람이 말한다("You're in for it now!"). **Be in for something**과 혼동하면 안 된다. 그쪽은 좋든 나쁘든 무언가가 다가온다는 뜻일 뿐이다("We're in for a long night", "You're in for a treat"). Jay는 친구를 놀릴 때 쓰거나, 꾸중을 예상할 때 "I'm in for it"으로 먼저 인정할 수 있다.
Ken: "In for it"이라는 게 한 소리 듣게 된다는 뜻이야?
"in for a long night"이랑은 달라.
Ken: 그러니까 금요일엔 in for a long night이었고, 오늘은 in for it이네.
"I'm in for it. I already put a note in the channel owning it before she asks."
"Friday you were in for a long night, and today you're in for it" — 같은 골격의 두 표현을 대비하면 둘 다 오래 남는다.
