In a one-on-one, Mina tells Jay that Hana, a junior engineer, is exhausted again even though she is not on the incident rotation. Jay explains why: she absorbs everyone else's stress. Then he decides what to change.
Why this conversation
An empath is a person with unusually strong empathy, someone who picks up other people's feelings as if they were their own. The word started in science fiction and pop psychology, so it is informal and a little fashionable; in a serious HR document you would say "highly empathetic". It is not the same as "kind" or "sensitive": kind is about what you do, sensitive is about being easily hurt, empath is about feeling what others feel. On a team it names both a strength (spots who is struggling) and a risk (burns out on other people's problems).
Dialogue
Mina: Hana looks exhausted again, and she isn't even on the incident rotation this week.
Jay: She's an empath. Someone panics in the channel and she feels it as if it were hers. Then she stays up fixing things that aren't her job.
Mina: Is "empath" a real word, or pop psychology?
Jay: A bit of both. It means someone with unusually strong empathy. In a team it means she's great at spotting who's struggling and terrible at protecting her own evenings.
Mina: So a gift and a risk.
Jay: Right. I'll move her onto the customer-facing bugs, where that gift pays off, and mute her from the war room after seven.

Mina: Hana
Mina: "empath"
Mina:
"She's an empath" 뒤에 "Someone panics in the channel and she feels it as if it were hers"를 붙이면 단어를 몰라도 뜻이 잡힌다.
"great at spotting who's struggling and terrible at protecting her own evenings" — great at / terrible at을 나란히 두면 평가가 공정하게 들린다.
