Why this conversation

Live it up means to enjoy yourself lavishly, usually spending money: "They went to Vegas and really lived it up." It is not "live well"; it is a short burst of indulgence. The second piece is must have been -ing: must is a confident guess, have been -ing puts it in the past and stretches it over a period, so the line reads "I can tell you were having a great time back then." "I bet" at the end repeats the guess: redundant on paper, natural out loud.

Mateo가 법인카드로 다녀온 리스본 3일짜리 컨퍼런스에서 돌아왔다. 호텔은 강가였다. Jay는 얼마나 신나게 놀았을지 놀리고, Mateo는 복도 토크로 다 보냈다고 우긴다.

왜 이 대화인가

**Live it up**은 보통 돈을 쓰면서 호화롭게 즐긴다는 뜻이다. "They went to Vegas and really lived it up." "잘 살다"가 아니라 짧게 터지는 방탕에 가깝다. 두 번째 조각은 **must have been -ing**다. must는 확신에 찬 추측, have been -ing는 그것을 과거에 놓고 일정 기간으로 늘리므로 이 문장은 "그때 신나게 지냈던 게 눈에 보인다"로 읽힌다. 끝의 "I bet"는 추측을 한 번 더 반복하는 것이라 글에서는 군더더기지만 말로는 자연스럽다.
