At a bar after work, Tom tells Jay he has taken Ken's on-call shift again, plus the weekend release. Ken presents the results upstairs while Tom carries the pager. Jay wants to push back as a friend, not as a manager.
Why this conversation
Run yourself ragged is to wear yourself out by rushing from one task to the next; "ragged" is the word for clothes worn to shreds, and the image is a person worn thin the same way. The sting of the line is "for someone else": the exhaustion is real and the credit goes elsewhere. It is close to "work yourself to the bone", but that one is about brutally hard labour, while "ragged" is about frantic running around. It is not "get angry" and not merely "be busy".
