Except, perhaps, for Kim, and on deadline day.

Priya, a new hire from abroad, asks Jay over coffee whether the team works much overtime before she signs. The honest answer has two exceptions: Kim, who probably stays late out of habit, and deadline day, when everyone does. Jay wants to say both without letting them merge into one.

Why this conversation

Except, perhaps, for Kim, and on deadline day carries two separate exceptions, kept apart by "and": except for Kim, and except on deadline day. The commas around "perhaps" mark it as an aside about Kim only. Without the "and", "for Kim on deadline day" collapses into one phrase and makes a different claim. The two exceptions also differ in certainty: Kim gets "perhaps", deadline day gets none. For 칼퇴하다 there is no single English verb; "leave on time" is the natural phrase.

Dialogue

Priya: Honest question before I sign. Does this team work a lot of overtime?

Jay: Almost never. Except, perhaps, for Kim, and on deadline day. Otherwise everyone leaves on time.

Priya: Wait, is Kim the exception only on deadline day, or in general?

Jay: Two separate exceptions. Kim stays late most days out of habit, so I said "perhaps". Deadline day is the one day everyone stays, no "perhaps" about it.

Priya: Got it. Two exceptions, joined with "and".

Jay: Exactly. Without the "and", you'd hear "Kim on deadline day" as one thing, and that's not what I mean.

Except, perhaps, for Kim, and on deadline day.

**Except, perhaps, for Kim, and on deadline day**는 서로 다른 예외 둘을 "and"로 떼어 놓는다. "and"를 빼면 "for Kim on deadline day"가 한 덩어리로 붙어 "마감일의 Kim"이라는 다른 주장이 된다.

"Except, perhaps, for Kim, and on deadline day" — "and"가 없으면 "마감일의 Kim"으로 붙어 읽힌다.
"out of habit, so I said 'perhaps'"처럼 단어 선택의 이유가 곧 설명이 된다.
