To connive in cheating somebody is to take secret part in the cheating. To connive at something is the weaker and more common sense: to know about it and let it happen. Either way the verb carries intent, so it belongs in an audit report or a courtroom, not in a complaint about a colleague who forgot to check a number. If you only mean carelessness, say "missed it" or "didn't check".
