Why this conversation
To pit A against B is to set two sides in opposition, usually because some larger force arranges it — a war, a policy, a tournament draw. It is very often passive: "two teams pitted against each other". This pit has nothing to do with a hole in the ground or the stone in a peach. The escalation in the sentence comes from the frame "didn't just X, they also Y", which repeats the verb and enlarges the object.
