On a long flight the sign above the aisle says "Lavatory occupied", and the passenger next to Jay asks why the plane does not just say toilet. Jay explains which word belongs where.
Why this conversation
Lavatory is the formal word for a toilet, and it survives mostly on aircraft signage and in older British writing. In everyday American English you ask for the restroom or the bathroom; in Britain, the loo or the toilet. Asking "where is the lavatory?" in a café is not wrong, only stiff and dated, and note that "toilet" in American English tends to name the fixture rather than the room.
Dialogue
Nora: "Lavatory occupied." Does anyone actually say lavatory?
Jay: Airlines do, and old British novels. It's the formal word — on the ground I'd ask for the restroom.
Nora: And in London?
Jay: The loo, if I know the person. Lavatory isn't wrong anywhere — it just sounds like a sign rather than a person.

카페에서 "where is the lavatory?"
Nora:
"It just sounds like a sign rather than a person" — 어색함을 설명하는 부드러운 표현.
