He had a falling-out with his neighbour over a trivial misunderstanding.

In a one-on-one, Jay's manager asks why two engineers on his team have stopped reviewing each other's pull requests. Jay explains that it started with a misread comment, not a real disagreement.

Why this conversation

A falling-out is a quarrel that ends a friendship or a working relationship, and it is spelled with the -ing and a hyphen as a noun: "they had a falling-out". The verb form is "fall out with somebody", so "he had a fall out" (as jay's card prints it) is not standard. Use "over + the cause" for what the quarrel was about, and note it is personal, not a mere technical disagreement.

Dialogue

Mina: Those two used to review everything together. What happened?

Jay: They had a falling-out over a trivial misunderstanding — one blunt review comment that read worse than it was meant.

Mina: Is that a technical disagreement I should mediate?

Jay: No, it's personal now. If it were technical they'd still be arguing; they fell out, so they went quiet instead.

He had a falling-out with his neighbour over a trivial misunderstanding. —

동사형은 "fall out with somebody"라서, jay의 카드에 적힌 "a fall out"은 표준 형태가 아니다.

Mina:

"a falling-out over a trivial misunderstanding" — about이 아니라 over가 기본형이다.
  2. 명사 a falling-out과 동사 fall out을 한 대화 안에서 함께 쓴다. "They had a falling-out… they fell out, so they went quiet" — 형태를 바꿔 반복하면 둘 다 몸에 남는다.
