On the smoking terrace behind the office, a colleague tells Jay he has been trying to quit for a month because his flatmate will not let the subject drop.
Why this conversation
To get on at somebody about something is to keep criticising or nagging them about it, again and again. It is British and informal, and the repetition is built in. The preposition pair matters: *at* the person, *about* the thing. Do not confuse it with "get on with somebody", which means to like each other.
Dialogue
Tom: Four a day now, down from twelve. My flatmate finally broke me.
Jay: So she got on at him about the habit of smoking, and it worked. That's the sentence I learned this week.
Tom: Got on at? That's nagging, right?
Jay: Repeated nagging, yes. One complaint doesn't count. And it's "at" the person, "about" the thing.
Tom: Easy to mix up with "get on with".
Jay: Completely different. You two clearly get on with each other, she just gets on at you about the cigarettes.

She got on at him about the habit of smoking. —
**Get on at somebody about something**은 어떤 일로 계속해서 잔소리하거나 나무란다는 뜻이다. 한 번 지적한 것은 get on at이 아니다. 사이가 좋다는 뜻의 "get on with somebody"와는 정반대이니 구분해야 한다.
Jay: 그러니까 "she got on at him about the habit of smoking"이고 그게 통했다는 거네.
Tom: Got on at?
Tom: "get on with"랑 헷갈리기 쉽겠다.
"it's 'at' the person, 'about' the thing" — 구동사는 전치사까지 한 덩어리로 외워야 쓸 수 있다.
"get on with each other"와 "gets on at you"를 붙여 말하면 둘의 차이가 그대로 남는다.
