The neighbour on Jay's floor has stopped saying hello in the lobby. The building manager tells Jay why, and asks whether the residents' group should do anything.
Why this conversation
Disconsolate means so sad that no comfort reaches you — the word literally says "cannot be consoled". It is stronger and more formal than "upset" or "sad", and it takes "over" or "about" for the cause. Because it is a written word, saying it to the grieving person's face can sound cold; it is for describing them to someone else.
Dialogue
Hana: Don't take it personally. She's barely spoken to anyone for two weeks.
Jay: Is she all right? She used to stop and chat by the mailboxes.
Hana: Her dog died. Fifteen years old.
Jay: Then she's disconsolate over the death of her dog, and two weeks is nothing. I'll just say good morning and leave it there.
Hana: Should the residents' group send something?
Jay: A card, maybe. Not a group visit. I'd never use that word to her face either, it's a word for describing someone, not for comforting them.

She was disconsolate over the death of her dog. —
Hana:
Hana:
"a word for describing someone, not for comforting them" — 3인칭 서술용과 위로용을 구분한다.
"A card, maybe. Not a group visit."
