Rapacious soldiers looted the houses in the defeated city.
Jay watches a history documentary with a friend who studies museums, and a caption about a looted collection comes up. He asks how the English narration describes the soldiers.
Why this conversation
Rapacious means greedy to the point of taking by force, and loot is the verb for stealing during a war or a riot. Both are strong, written words: a bank that charges high fees can be called rapacious in an editorial, but not in a meeting. Note "loot" is also a noun for the stolen goods, and in games it means the drops you pick up.
Dialogue
Sam: That whole gallery is marked "provenance disputed". Half of it left the country in 1905.
Jay: The narrator put it plainly: rapacious soldiers looted the houses in the defeated city.
Sam: Museums rarely use that verb about themselves.
Jay: No. They say "acquired". "Looted" names the war, and "rapacious" names the greed.
Sam: Could you use rapacious about a company?
Jay: In an opinion piece, yes. In a meeting it would sound like a speech, so I'd say "predatory fees" instead.

Rapacious soldiers looted the houses in the defeated city. —
Sam:
"In an opinion piece, yes. In a meeting it would sound like a speech." — 뜻과 사용 장소를 한 쌍으로 외운다.
완곡어와 직설어를 나란히 놓으면 뜻이 또렷해진다. 박물관의 "acquired"와 다큐멘터리의 "looted"가 같은 사건의 두 표현이다.
