Why this conversation
Any (old) how means carelessly, in no order at all — "the cables were thrown in any old how". The "old" is optional and adds a note of resigned complaint; without it the phrase is plainer. It is British and informal, and it is not the same as "anyhow" meaning "in any case", which is far more common in writing.
