The CEO's wild spending will break the bank for the company.

Ken, a friend from a former job, shows Jay his startup's monthly burn over lunch: a new office, three conferences and a mascot costume. Jay adds it up and eleven months of runway becomes five.

Why this conversation

To break the bank is to cost more than you can afford; it comes from gambling, where a player wins more than the house is holding. Everyday use is usually the negative joke — "one coffee won't break the bank" — so the plain affirmative, as here, sounds serious. Wild spending is uncontrolled spending, not enjoyable spending.

Dialogue

Ken: The office is only twelve thousand a month, and it's for hiring.

Jay: With the conferences, that's five months of runway, not eleven. This wild spending will break the bank.

Ken: Break the bank isn't usually that literal, is it?

Jay: Usually it's a joke — "one coffee won't break the bank". Said straight, it means you actually run out.

Ken: So the mascot goes.

Jay: The mascot goes, one conference stays, and you show the board numbers before they ask for them.

The CEO's wild spending will break the bank for the company. —

Ken: break the bank

Ken:

"that's five months of runway, not eleven"이 "비싸다"보다 훨씬 강하다.
