let somebody in for something

At the gym on a Tuesday evening, Hana tells Jay she signed them both up for a half marathon in six weeks. Jay is looking at a training plan that starts tomorrow and ends in pain.

Why this conversation

Let yourself in for something means to get into something unpleasant, usually without realising how bad it would be. It is almost always used with "know" or "realise": "I had no idea what I was letting myself in for." The thing is always trouble — work, expense, pain — never a happy surprise. With another object, "she let me in for a weekend of moving boxes", it quietly blames whoever arranged it.

Dialogue

Hana: I entered us both for the half marathon. Six weeks from Sunday.

Jay: Twenty-one kilometres. I don't think you know what you've let me in for.

Hana: You run eight every weekend.

Jay: Eight flat and slow. This plan has hill repeats on Wednesdays — that's what I'm letting myself in for if I say yes.

Hana: So it's a no?

Jay: It's a yes, with complaints. Six weeks of them.

let somebody in for something — (좋지 않은 일에) 말려들게 하다

"I had no idea what I was letting myself in for." 목적어를 다른 사람으로 두면("she let me in for a weekend of moving boxes") 그 일을 벌인 사람을 은근히 탓하는 말이 된다.

Hana:

Hana:

Jay:

  1. 이 표현은 늘 "know / realise what" 뒤에 온다. "I don't think you know what you've let me in for."
"It's a yes, with complaints."
