digress

A weekly one-to-one with Priya, who joined six weeks ago. Jay is walking her through why the billing service was split in two, and he keeps sliding into the history of the old monolith instead of answering her question.

Why this conversation

To digress is to leave your main subject and talk about something else. The verb is fairly formal, but the set phrase "but I digress" is everyday English — you say it about yourself, to pull back on track, and it sounds self-aware rather than apologetic. Telling someone else "you digress" is a complaint, so say "let's come back to your question" instead. The noun is "a digression".

Dialogue

Priya: So why is billing two services instead of one?

Jay: Because refunds and invoices have different failure modes. Back in 2019 the monolith had a cron job that — but I digress. Your question was why two.

Priya: I don't mind the history, honestly.

Jay: It helps later, not today. Answer first, digression after — otherwise you leave with a story and no answer.

Priya: Answer first, then. Two services, because?

Jay: Because a failed refund must never block an invoice. Everything else is detail.

남에게 "you digress"라고 하면 불평이 되니, 그럴 때는 "let's come back to your question"이라고 하는 편이 낫다. 명사형은 a digression이다.

대화

Priya: 그래서 결제가 왜 하나가 아니라 두 서비스예요?

Jay: 환불과 청구서는 실패 양상이 다르거든요. 2019년에 모놀리스에 크론 잡이 하나 있었는데 — 아, 딴 얘기로 샜네요. 질문은 왜 둘이냐였죠.

Priya: 사실 옛날 이야기도 괜찮아요.

Jay: 그건 나중에 도움이 되지 오늘은 아니에요. 답 먼저, 딴 이야기는 그다음. 안 그러면 이야기만 듣고 답은 못 가져가니까요.

Priya: 그럼 답 먼저요. 두 서비스인 이유는요?

Jay: 실패한 환불이 청구서를 막으면 절대 안 되기 때문이에요. 나머지는 다 세부 사항이고요.

협업 기법 세 가지

  1. "but I digress"는 스스로를 끊는 신호다. 말이 새는 것을 알아차렸을 때 사과 대신 이 한마디로 본론에 복귀한다.
  2. 설명 순서를 규칙으로 선언한다. "Answer first, digression after." 멘토링에서 상대가 무엇을 가져갈지 정해 준다.
