At a potluck in Mina's flat, Jay is wrapping the leftover roast while the others argue about the film they watched. The same word turns up twice in five minutes, once around the tray and once about a character.
Why this conversation
Foil is the thin metal sheet you wrap food in — aluminium foil, gold foil. It is also a person or thing that makes another look better by contrast: "the quiet brother is the perfect foil for her". And as a verb it means to thwart a plan: "the robbery was foiled". Three senses, one spelling, no shared logic; the sentence around it decides which one you are hearing.
Dialogue
Mina: There's foil in the drawer under the kettle if you're wrapping that.
Jay: Found it. Meanwhile you two have been fighting about that film for twenty minutes.
Mina: Because the younger sister does nothing all film. She's pointless.
Jay: She's a foil. Her calm is what makes the older one look reckless — same word as the foil in your drawer, completely different sense.
Mina: And the third sense? I've seen "foiled" in headlines.
Jay: The verb, to thwart something. A foiled robbery is one the police stopped.

"the quiet brother is the perfect foil for her"처럼 쓴다. 동사로는 계획을 좌절시킨다는 뜻이다. "the robbery was foiled". 철자는 하나인데 뜻이 셋이고 서로 연결 고리가 없다. 어느 뜻인지는 주변 문장이 정한다.
대화
Mina:
"same word as the foil in your drawer, completely different sense."
비평 용어는 기능으로 설명한다. "Her calm is what makes the older one look reckless." 인물의 쓸모를 대조로 설명하면 반박이 쉬워진다.
