A salary conversation at the end of the year. Jay has a written offer from another company and is deciding how much of that to say out loud. Ken, a friend who has hired engineers for years, tells him what actually moves the number.
Why this conversation
To get the leverage is to gain the stronger position in a negotiation — to hold something the other side wants and could lose. It is ordinary business English and carries no blame; you can "have leverage over" someone or say "that gives us leverage". Because leverage also means borrowed money in finance, say "negotiating leverage" when money is the topic. It is not a general word for "advantage": leverage always implies a lever you could actually pull.
Dialogue
Ken: Do you have anything in writing from the other company?
Jay: A signed offer, yes. That's how I get the leverage — they can't treat my number as a wish.
Ken: True, but leverage you wave around gets read as a threat. Name what you want first.
Jay: So: the number, the reason, and only then the fact that I have another option.
Ken: Right. And say "another option", not "I'm leaving". One is negotiating leverage, the other is a resignation.
Jay: Understood. I'd rather keep the lever than pull it.

"have leverage over somebody", "that gives us leverage"처럼 쓴다.
Ken:
"the number, the reason, and only then the fact that I have another option" — 순서만 바꿔도 협박처럼 들리지 않는다.
"say 'another option', not 'I'm leaving'" — 하나는 협상, 하나는 사직이다.
