Why this conversation
A sedative is a drug that calms you down or makes you drowsy. It is not a painkiller and not a general anaesthetic: it takes the edge off your nerves, it does not remove pain or switch you off. Doctors say "a sedative" for the drug, "sedation" for the procedure, and "sedating" for a side effect of some other medicine. Do not stretch it to mean "relaxing" — a quiet weekend is calming, never sedative.
