Why this conversation
Avert has two uses that rarely get confused because the objects differ. With a disaster, strike or crash it means to prevent something bad just in time: "the driver averted a crash". With eyes or a face it means to turn them away, usually from something you would rather not see. It is formal; in speech "stop" or "prevent" is more common, and it does not mean simply avoiding a person.

Jay: A taxi cut across two lanes. My driver braked and averted a crash by about a metre. I averted my eyes and waited for the noise.

왜 이 대화인가
**Avert**는 두 가지로 쓰이는데 목적어가 달라서 헷갈릴 일이 거의 없다. 사고, 파업, 충돌 같은 말과 함께 쓰면 나쁜 일을 아슬아슬하게 막는다는 뜻이다. "the driver averted a crash"처럼 쓴다. 눈이나 얼굴과 함께 쓰면 보고 싶지 않은 쪽에서 시선을 돌린다는 뜻이다. 격식체라서 일상 대화에서는 stop이나 prevent가 더 흔하고, 사람을 피해 다닌다는 뜻은 없다.
