Why this conversation
Petrified carries two senses from one root, stone. "A petrified forest" is wood that literally turned to stone; "a petrified expression" is a face frozen with fear. In speech the fear sense dominates and it is much stronger than "scared" — it means too afraid to move. The trap is using it for mild nerves before a demo; that is "nervous", not petrified.
