Why this conversation
It transpired that introduces something that came to light only later: "알고 보니". It is formal and neutral, common in reports and news, and it puts the fact first without naming who was at fault. Note the double past perfect, "had had a contact", because the contact existed before the robbery being narrated. It is not a synonym for "it happened".
