Why this conversation
To shirk is to avoid work you are supposed to do, out of laziness rather than inability — "shirk your responsibilities", "no one shirked". Used intransitively, as in the dictionary sentence "Discipline in the company was strict and no one shirked", it means nobody slacked off at all. It is a judging word: calling a colleague a shirker is a real accusation, so in a meeting Jay should describe the pattern ("the weekend shifts keep moving") and save "shirk" for the principle, or for himself.
