gaffe

After a client dinner, Jay and a colleague walk back to the hotel. At the table their sales lead congratulated the client on a merger that has not been announced yet, and the room went quiet. They have to decide whether anyone should write an apology tonight.

Why this conversation

A gaffe is a social blunder — the wrong thing said out loud in front of the wrong people, usually from carelessness rather than malice. It is not a technical mistake (that is "a bug" or "an error") and not a lie; the damage is embarrassment. English pairs it with "make": you make a gaffe, you do not "do" one. Related words are "a slip" (smaller) and "a faux pas" (the French borrowing, the same idea in a more formal key).

Dialogue

Nora: Did you see their CFO's face? Nobody was supposed to know about that deal.

Jay: It was a gaffe, not a leak. He read it somewhere and assumed it was public.

Nora: Should he email them tonight?

Jay: One short line tomorrow, no explanation. A gaffe gets smaller if you apologize once and larger if you keep talking about it.

영어에서는 make와 짝을 이룬다. make a gaffe라고 하지 do a gaffe라고 하지 않는다.

Nora:

"It was a gaffe, not a leak" — 실언인지 유출인지 규정해야 대응의 크기가 정해진다.
