drive something home

Jay is rehearsing a fifteen-minute conference talk in an empty meeting room the night before, and a colleague listens. The slides are accurate but the audience will not remember the one number that matters, so she tells him to hammer it in.

Why this conversation

To drive something home is to make a point land so hard that nobody can miss it — usually with a concrete example, a number, or a repetition. The full pattern is "drive something home to somebody", and the object can also be the argument itself: "drive home an argument". Note the word order: with a long object you say "drive home the point that…", but with "it" the pronoun goes in the middle — "drive it home". It has nothing to do with driving a car home.

Dialogue

Priya: The talk is clear, but I won't remember anything tomorrow. What's the one number?

Jay: Ninety seconds. That's the deploy time after the migration. I need to drive that home to a room that has never met our pipeline.

Priya: Then say it three times and put it on one slide alone.

Jay: I'll open with it, repeat it after the demo, and close on it. Repetition is how you drive home an argument in fifteen minutes.

완전한 형태는 "drive something home to somebody"이고, 목적어로 주장 자체가 올 수도 있다("drive home an argument"). 목적어가 길면 "drive home the point that…"이지만 대명사 it은 가운데에 넣어 "drive it home"이라고 한다.

"I need to drive that home to a room that has never met our pipeline" — to
"I'll open with it, repeat it after the demo, and close on it" — 세 동사를 나열하면 계획이 있다는 인상이 남는다.
