Why this conversation
Finish something off is to complete the last part of it: a set, a report, the milk in the fridge. Finish somebody/something off also means to kill or destroy what is already badly damaged, and in play it means to exhaust a person: "that hill finished me off". The object decides which sense you hear, so with a person keep it clearly jokey.
