get one's bearings

Jay lands for a two-week office visit and Priya meets him at arrivals. He has a hotel address, a transit card that doesn't work yet, and no idea which way the river runs, so the first hour is about orientation, not work.

Why this conversation

To get your bearings is to work out where you are and how things are laid out — literally on a map, and figuratively in a new job or city. A bearing is a compass direction, which is why the noun stays plural here. The companion idiom is "lose your bearings". Asking for a day to get your bearings sounds sensible, not slow.

Dialogue

Priya: Straight to the office, or hotel first?

Jay: Hotel first, and then let me walk around the block. I need an hour to get my bearings.

Priya: The office is the glass building north of the river. Everything else is south.

Jay: That one sentence helps more than the map did.

Priya: Standup is at nine thirty. Will you be up?

Jay: I will. I'd rather lose the evening getting my bearings than arrive lost tomorrow.

Priya: 바로 사무실로 갈래, 아니면 호텔 먼저?

Jay: 호텔 먼저, 그다음엔 한 바퀴 걷게 해 줘. 방향 잡는 데 한 시간은 필요해.

Priya: 사무실은 강 북쪽 유리 건물이야. 나머지는 다 남쪽이고.

Jay: 그 한 문장이 지도보다 도움이 되네.

Priya: 스탠드업은 9시 반이야. 일어날 수 있겠어?

Jay: 응. 내일 헤매며 도착하느니 오늘 저녁을 방향 잡는 데 쓰는 게 나아.

협업 기법 세 가지

  1. 적응 시간을 요구가 아니라 계획으로 말한다. "I need an hour to get my bearings."는 게으름이 아니라 준비로 들린다.
  2. 길 안내는 기준선 하나로 준다. "north of the river… everything else is south" — 지도보다 강·큰길 하나가 기억에 남는다.
