Why this conversation
An obituary is a newspaper article reporting a death together with an account of the person's life; journalists shorten it to "an obit". A eulogy is different: that is the speech given at the funeral, always warm. A bare death notice with the funeral details is different again. Obituaries are written in advance for famous people, which is why they appear the same day.
