Why this conversation
To squirm is to twist your body because you are uncomfortable, and by extension to feel sharp embarrassment: "I squirmed when he read my old code aloud." It is informal but not rude, and very often in the pattern "make somebody squirm". The trap is thinking it means escaping — the wriggling is the point, not getting away.
