get the better of somebody

Yusuf, a colleague who is also interviewing abroad, asks Jay how his second round went. Jay knew the capacity numbers in the system-design interview but nerves made him skip them, and he wants to describe that lapse plainly, without grovelling.

Why this conversation

Get the better of somebody means to defeat or overcome them. An opponent can get the better of you in an argument, and, very commonly, a feeling can: "my nerves got the better of me", "curiosity got the better of him". That second use is the one Jay will need most, because it explains a lapse in one clause without turning it into an apology. It is not "get better" (recover, improve). The American variant is "got the best of me".

Dialogue

Yusuf: How did the second round go?

Jay: The coding part was fine. In the system-design round my nerves got the better of me and I skipped the capacity numbers.

Yusuf: Got the better of you — so the nerves won?

Jay: For about five minutes. I knew the numbers; I just didn't say them. Then the interviewer asked and I recovered.

Yusuf: Did you mention it in the follow-up email?

Jay: One line. I said I'd been nervous and skipped the estimates, and I put the estimates in the note. No apology paragraph.

get the better of somebody — ~을 이기다; (감정이) ~을 압도하다

**Get the better of somebody**는 ~을 이기다, 압도하다는 뜻이다. "my nerves got the better of me", "curiosity got the better of him". 미국식 변형은 "got the best of me"다.

대화

Yusuf: 2

Yusuf:

  1. 실수의 원인이 감정이면 "X got the better of me"로 한 절에 끝낸다. "my nerves got the better of me and I skipped the capacity numbers" — 원인과 결과를 붙이고 거기서 멈춘다.
"I said I'd been nervous and skipped the estimates, and I put the estimates in the note."
