A two-bit criminal.

Priya asks Jay over lunch why a token scam that just got covered in the news was so amateurish. Jay wants to say the operator was small-time, and since Priya is a close friend and the target is a public scammer, he can afford the dated, contemptuous phrase from the drama subtitle.

Why this conversation

Two-bit means cheap, petty, third-rate: two bits was a quarter of a dollar, from the old habit of cutting a Spanish silver coin into eight bits, so "two-bit" is "worth 25 cents". It stacks contempt on top of size, so "a two-bit criminal" is not just small-time but "some nobody". It is American and sounds like 1960s film noir, which is charming with a friend and jarring in a report. The neutral words are small-time (small scale, low rank) and petty (minor offences); use those about a real person in writing, and keep "two-bit" for jokes, quotes and people who will never read it.

Dialogue

Priya: That rug pull in the news, the one with the copied website. How did anyone fall for it?

Jay: Because it was cheap and fast. A two-bit criminal with a template and a Telegram group, not a syndicate.

Priya: Two-bit? That sounds like something out of an old detective film.

Jay: It is. Two bits used to be 25 cents, so two-bit means worth a quarter. I'd write "small-time" in the post-mortem, but he'll never read this lunch.

Priya: So the lesson is that small-time doesn't mean harmless.

Jay: Right. Four hundred people lost money to a template. Petty operator, real damage.

A two-bit criminal. —

Priya: two-bit?

"Two bits used to be 25 cents, so two-bit means worth a quarter" — 상대가 이상하게 들으면 바로 설명할 수 있어야 쓸 자격이 생긴다.
"I'd write 'small-time' in the post-mortem" — 같은 판단을 서면에서는 중립어로 바꾼다고 대화 안에서 밝힌다.
