Why
Beginners tend to call a chart "bullish" because its slope looks up, or because a moving average points up, and then get caught when the next low undercuts the prior one and the read was never confirmed by structure at all. Dow's definition is mechanical and falsifiable: label the swings, check whether each new high and low is higher or lower than the last, and the trend call follows without opinion. The failure this prevents is trading, or writing research about, a "trend" that the swing sequence never actually confirmed, and missing the one moment that matters — a break of structure — when the sequence changes and the market has said, in plain terms, that the earlier read is over.
How it works
Dow's definition and swing points
A swing high is a bar, or a small cluster of bars, whose high sits above the highs immediately before and after it; a swing low is the mirror case. Only mark swings that are large enough to matter on the timeframe you are reading — a 3-bar wiggle on a 5-minute chart is noise, not structure. The sequence of marked swings gives the call:
| Pattern | Label | Call |
|---|---|---|
| Each high above the prior high, each low above the prior low | HH, HL | Uptrend |
| Each high below the prior high, each low below the prior low | LH, LL | Downtrend |
| Highs and lows overlap with no consistent direction | — | Range |
A trend stays intact as long as this sequence holds. The first swing that breaks it is the whole ballgame.
Break of structure vs pullback
A pullback is a retracement that still respects the last confirmed swing: in an uptrend, price dips but holds above the most recent higher low before turning back up. A break of structure (often shortened BOS) is different in kind, not degree — in an uptrend, it is price making a new low below the most recent higher low, which breaks the HH/HL sequence itself. A pullback is expected and repeats through the whole life of a trend; a break of structure ends the read that produced the trend call.
The classic mistake is calling a real break of structure a "pullback" out of hope, or calling every pullback a reversal out of nerves. A workable rule of thumb: wait for a candle to close beyond the swing point, not just wick through it, before calling BOS. That costs some speed but cuts a lot of false calls from a single long wick.
Trendlines, channels, and the steepening trap
A trendline needs two touches to draw — connect two swing lows for an up trendline, two swing highs for a down trendline — and is only treated as confirmed once a third touch respects it. A Parallel Channel extends the same idea: draw the base trendline, then set a second, parallel line off the opposite swings, giving a rough band the trend has been trading inside.
The trap: as a move accelerates, it is tempting to keep redrawing the trendline steeper so it still "touches" the newest lows. Do this enough times and the trendline is always valid in hindsight and useless as a warning, because it was fit to the outcome rather than drawn from the first confirmed swings. Rule of thumb: keep the original two- or three-touch trendline; if price closes through it, treat that as information about the trend weakening, rather than reaching for a steeper line to keep the picture intact. A trendline break and a structural break (a new HH/HL or LH/LL swing) are related but not the same event — a steep trendline can hold right up until an actual break of structure, or break well before one.
On TradingView
The drawing tools live in the left-hand toolbar. Click the line-tools icon to open the flyout: Trend Line draws a plain two-point line between the swings you click; Ray behaves the same way but only extends infinitely in one direction, which is convenient for projecting a level forward without manually toggling extension; Parallel Channel draws the base line plus an automatic parallel line you drag to set the channel width. Any drawn line can be extended in the object's settings (or by right-clicking it) with separate "extend left" and "extend right" options — useful for checking whether an old trendline is still relevant to current price. The Pitchfork tool sits in the same flyout and is a real TradingView feature, but it is out of scope here; skip it for now.
To read structure rather than noise, zoom out until roughly 200 bars are visible on screen — enough bars to see several full swings, not just the last few candles' wiggle. The Replay button, in the top toolbar (a clock-like bar-replay icon), lets you drop a starting point in the chart's history and step forward bar by bar; use it to practise labelling swing highs and lows and calling breaks of structure without the hindsight you get from seeing the whole chart at once. The free plan supports Replay but with some limit on how far back into history it can start — check the current limit in the tool itself rather than assuming a fixed number.
Where it lands in Jayverse
- Number: file the regime with the reading. Any indicator reading Number distributes should carry a one-word regime tag, trend or range, based on the swing sequence, since the same RSI or MACD reading means something different in each.
- Verex: outcome-share price has its own structure. A market's YES/NO share price prints its own swing highs and lows on TradingView-style charts; a break of structure there is a useful read for internal notes, though it is not a resolution source and should never be treated as one.
- The Auditor: "was structure checked" is checkable. Add "swing sequence read before a regime call" to the list of things the Auditor can verify a research note actually did, the same way it already checks reference-rate sourcing.
- Theory: range regimes and volatility. A market stuck in a range typically shows lower realized volatility than a trending one; when the log-returns and VaR items are written, note that a VaR figure estimated during a range regime can understate risk once the market breaks structure.
Verified and unverified
Verified: Dow's higher-high/higher-low and lower-high/lower-low definition of trend is standard technical-analysis material, and TradingView's Trend Line, Ray, Parallel Channel, Pitchfork drawing tools and the Replay feature are documented, real tools in the platform. The two-touch-to-draw, third-touch-to-confirm convention for trendlines is standard classical-charting teaching. Unverified, rule of thumb: the exact bar-count threshold for a "significant" swing, the "wait for a closed candle" filter for calling a break of structure, and the free plan's specific Replay history limit, which can change — verify the last one in-app rather than trusting a remembered number.
