Why
A beginner's first mistake is treating support or resistance as one exact price, then abandoning a plan because price reversed a tick early, or getting stopped out by a wick that closed back inside the same candle. Support and resistance are the vocabulary every other drawing tool depends on — a moving average, a Fibonacci retracement, a volume profile all just propose candidate zones — so this is the ground floor trend lines and chart patterns reduce to. Expecting each touch to weaken rather than guarantee the next bounce stops over-trusting a line that is really just where a tool snapped, and it moves the stop outside the zone, sized by recent volatility (ATR) — what separates a workable risk-to-reward (R:R) plan from one noise stops out.
How it works
Where a level comes from
- Swing highs and lows: local peaks and troughs where price visibly reversed; the more a candle pokes past its neighbors, the cleaner the swing.
- Round numbers: psychological levels like $100 or 4.000, where orders cluster simply because people think in round numbers.
- High-volume closes: prices where heavy volume traded and candles closed, visible via
Volumeor a volume profile; a heavy close means many participants agreed price was fair.
A zone flagged by two or three of these at once is watched more closely.
Touches, weight, and role flip
Rule of thumb: more touches mean more traders have marked the zone, so more orders sit near it — attention is somewhat self-fulfilling. But it is not compounding strength: each approach fills or cancels resting orders, so a level can look strong on touch four and fail on touch five. A level on a higher timeframe (HTF), say a weekly swing low, generally outweighs the same price noticed only on a lower timeframe (LTF) chart, since more capital watches the higher one. When a zone breaks on a closing basis, roles reverse: buyers who defended support, plus their stops, now supply resistance from below, and the reverse holds for resistance turned support.
Break and retest, false breaks
A break and retest is the classic confirmation: price closes beyond a zone, then returns to test it from the new side before continuing. Traders who missed the break often wait for the retest to hold as their entry, since a failed retest that pushes back through warns the break was not real. A false break (fakeout) is a wick through the zone within one candle that closes back on the original side; read the wick as a probe, the close as confirmation. Wait for a candle close beyond the zone before trusting a level has broken.
On TradingView
Horizontal Line: one price across the whole chart; left toolbar's line-tools group, or hotkeyAlt+H.Horizontal Ray: extends only rightward from the clicked point, for a level relevant only from a specific date forward.Rectangle: a box across a price and time range — mark a zone instead of a line by dragging over the swing range.- Magnet mode: the toolbar's magnet icon snaps a point to the nearest
OHLCvalue in view, landing on a candle's exact high, low, open, or close. - Alerts: right-click a line, "Add Alert," condition
Crossing(orCrossing Up/Down). Since the real level is a zone, treat an alert as a trigger to look, not act. - Drawing visibility: right-click a drawing to set whether it shows only on the timeframe drawn or syncs across all timeframes; drawings are also scoped per symbol.
Where it lands in Jayverse
- Verex: size the market maker's spread to the zone, not the tick. Volatility clusters near known zones, so the maker should widen its spread inside one instead of assuming constant volatility; the same "zone, not point" discipline already applies to resolution prices and reference rates.
- Number: publish a level as a zone with the rule that found it. A reading naming a level should state which rule flagged it and the zone's width, so the claim is falsifiable, as the Auditor already expects.
- Auditor: log which rule flagged a level. A zone defended by two or three of swing highs/lows, round numbers, and volume is stronger than one flagged by only one; record which fired.
- Theory: size zone width and stops with ATR. The existing volatility and VaR items give the tool; width and stop distance should scale with recent
ATR, not a fixed pixel count.
Verified and unverified
Verified: zones over exact lines, swing highs/lows, round numbers, and high-volume nodes as sources, and role-reversal after a break, are standard technical analysis, covered in Murphy and in Edwards and Magee. On TradingView, the Horizontal Line, Horizontal Ray, and Rectangle tools, Alt+H, magnet mode's OHLC snapping, Crossing alerts, and per-drawing visibility scoping are documented in the TradingView Help Center. Unverified or rule of thumb: strength scaling with touch count, and a higher timeframe reliably outweighing a lower one — both convention, not formal law.
