Max pain describes the options chain, it does not pull the price — two weeks of watching a moving target
Max pain is the strike at which the most open options expire worthless, computed by summing, for every candidate settlement price, the payout owed to call and put holders, and taking the minimum. It is a fact about positioning at one moment, and the folk theory says price drifts toward it into expiry because dealers who sold the options hedge in that direction. The morning report tracked the September expiry for two weeks and wrote down where spot sat relative to max pain: below, then just above, then 2.8 percent above, then 2.2 percent above on expiry day, with max pain at $78,000 and spot at $76,355. The relationship kept changing while the price went nowhere in particular. Price did not follow max pain; max pain moved as positions moved. The report's conclusion, which this item records: keep observing, stop using it to predict. The honest reading is that the effect is weak and confined to the expiry session itself, and two weeks of observation agreed with the academic literature, which finds that the apparent pull toward max pain in index options is explained by ordinary price reversal and expiry-day trading rather than by a gravitational level.
The public numbers make the same point from another side. On 2026-09-15 crypto.news put the Deribit quarterly expiry of 2026-09-25 at $14.7 billion notional with max pain at $72,000 against spot near $78,000, and IBIT's 2026-09-18 option expiry had max pain at $40 a share, about $70,000 in BTC terms. Three max pains, one price. Which one is supposed to pull? For Number the rule that follows is procedural: record max pain with its expiry date and exchange, next to spot, as an observation about who is exposed, and never write it as a target. For Verex, an expiry-day market can use the mechanism honestly, "will BTC settle within 1 percent of the 09-25 Deribit max pain", because that is a claim about pinning in the final hours, which is the one place the effect has any support. Status on 2026-09-18: the report's series closed with the conclusion above; the 09-25 quarterly is the next observation, at $72,000 max pain, about 7 percent below spot.
Why
The theory has a real mechanism and a wrong conclusion. Dealers who are short options do hedge, and near expiry their hedging concentrates around strikes with large open interest, which can pin price in the last hours. That is a statement about the final session and about strikes with heavy interest, not about the max-pain strike specifically and not about the two weeks before. The wrong conclusion comes from reading a positioning summary as a forecast: max pain is computed from the same open interest that spot moves already reflect, so when price moves, positions are opened and closed and max pain moves with it. Watching it "approach" price over two weeks is watching the chain re-mark itself. The morning report's four readings, below, just above, above 2.8, above 2.2, are exactly that re-marking.
Why record a negative result at all? Because the indicator is everywhere in the feed, and a rule for what it is and is not is the only defence against reading it as a target on a day when the two happen to coincide. The report also makes a broader point that belongs in Fundamentals: an indicator earns a place in a daily reading only if it has a falsification condition written in advance. Two weeks of "price did not converge" is that condition being met.
How it works
The computation
For each candidate settlement price S, sum over strikes K: calls pay max(0, S − K) times call open interest at K; puts pay max(0, K − S) times put open interest at K. Max pain is the S that minimises the total. It changes whenever open interest changes, which is continuously, and it is dominated by the strikes with the largest interest, which for a monthly or quarterly expiry are often round numbers far from spot.

Spot moved little across the series; the relationship moved because max pain did. Conclusion recorded by the report: observe, do not predict. Expected effect, if any: pinning around heavy strikes in the final session.
Where it lands in Jayverse
Number: an observation, never a target. Print max pain with exchange, expiry date, and notional, next to spot and the distance. The sentence allowed is "positions are most exposed at X"; the sentence not allowed is "price should move toward X".
Verex: an expiry-day market is honest, a two-week one is not. "Settle within 1 percent of the 09-25 Deribit max pain" tests pinning where it may exist. "Reach max pain by expiry" from two weeks out is a market on noise.
Fundamentals rule: write the falsification condition first. Any indicator entering the daily reading gets a sentence like "if spot does not converge within N sessions over M expiries, the indicator is descriptive only". This one just met its condition.
Verified and unverified
Verified on 2026-09-18: the Deribit 2026-09-25 quarterly figures ($14.73 billion notional, 186,000 contracts, put-call 0.52, max pain $72,000, ETH max pain $2,200; crypto.news, 2026-09-15); the IBIT 2026-09-18 expiry (about $5 billion notional, max pain $40; Crypto Briefing); the August 2026 Deribit expiry as precedent ($6.44 billion, max pain $68,000 to $70,000 against spot near $79,000, and no pull; Decrypt, 2026-08-27); the research finding that max-pain predictability in index options is explained by reversal and expiry trading (Filippou, Garcia-Ares and Zapatero, as summarised by Arkham and BackQuant). From the morning report, not independently verified: the $78,000 max pain and $76,355 spot for the expiry tracked on 2026-09-18, the four relative readings, and which exchange and expiry that series followed, since Deribit's monthly and quarterly expiry is 2026-09-25 and 09-18 is a weekly.
