I worked myself to the bone.

In an interview, hiring manager Mateo asks Jay about a time a project went badly for him personally rather than for the code. Jay describes a launch crunch and what it taught him about leading a team.

Why this conversation

Work yourself to the bone means to work so hard and so long that nothing is left of you; the picture is flesh worn down to bone. It is a close cousin of "run yourself ragged", but "ragged" is frantic running around while "to the bone" is sheer grinding labour. The phrase reports effort, not virtue, so in an interview pair it with what you learned or it sounds like a boast. It has nothing to do with "bare bones" or "bone up on".

Dialogue

Mateo: Tell me about a time a project went badly for you, not for the code.

Jay: The mainnet launch two years ago. I worked myself to the bone for six weeks: fourteen-hour days, weekends, the lot.

Mateo: And the launch?

Jay: It shipped. But I made two bad calls in the last week that a rested engineer wouldn't have made. Working yourself to the bone is a sign the plan failed, not a badge.

Mateo: What's different now?

Jay: I cut scope earlier and rotate the crunch. Nobody on my team works themselves to the bone alone.

I worked myself to the bone. —

**Work yourself to the bone**은 너무 오래, 너무 세게 일해서 남는 게 없다는 뜻이며, 살이 닳아 뼈가 드러나는 그림이다. "run yourself ragged"와 사촌이지만 "ragged"는 정신없이 뛰어다니는 쪽이고 "to the bone"은 순수하게 고된 노동 쪽이다. "bare bones"나 "bone up on"과는 관계없다.

Mateo:

Mateo:

"Working yourself to the bone is a sign the plan failed, not a badge."
"I worked myself to the bone" → "Nobody on my team works themselves to the bone alone."
