Trickle-down chiponomics

Jay's team lead asks over lunch why the KOSPI keeps setting records while nobody Jay knows feels richer. Jay has just read The Economist's piece comparing Taiwan and South Korea as the two places where the AI chip boom should show up first, and he wants to give the answer in English, with the mechanism and not just the mood.

Why this conversation

This is the register of an economics feature: trickle down as a verb for benefits reaching ordinary people, plus a cluster of words for money arriving suddenly — bonanza, windfall, dividend — and a cluster for money arriving thinly — muted, stingier, piddling. The trap is hearing "trickle-down" as neutral description; in politics it is usually a jab, so Jay should say "the gains spread" when he wants to stay neutral. Learn the growth adjectives as a ladder too: brisk is healthy, blistering is startling, and both are stronger than "good".

Dialogue

Hana: The index has doubled since 2023 and my life looks exactly the same. What am I missing?

Jay: Nothing. Taiwan is selling more chips, we're selling the same chips at much higher prices. Our export prices are up about 57% in a year. Volume hires people; price doesn't.

Hana: So the money stops at the chipmakers.

Jay: At them and their shareholders. Under 1% of Korean workers are in the industry. The gains haven't trickled down yet because the capex hasn't been spent yet.

Hana: And Taiwan already spent it.

Jay: Years ago. Once you're building fabs, wages rise across the whole workforce, not just in electronics. That's the Balassa-Samuelson effect. Ours should follow, just later.

Trickle-down chiponomics — AI

Hana:

Hana:

"Volume hires people; price doesn't."
"The gains haven't trickled down yet"의 yet과 "Ours should follow, just later."
