You're way too proper.

After work at a bar, Ken teases Jay about the way he writes Slack messages to teammates, full greetings and sign-offs included. Jay laughs it off and gives the teasing back, since Ken is the one who refuses to use emoji.

Why this conversation

Proper here is not "correct"; it describes a person's manner: well-mannered, formal, careful to do things the right way. Way too intensifies "too" in casual speech, so "you're way too proper" is light teasing that says "loosen up", not a compliment and not an insult. Keep it apart from its neighbours: square is stronger and dated, calling someone conservative and dull; uptight means tense and unable to relax. Say "way too proper" to a friend or a close colleague over drinks; in feedback at work say "a bit formal" instead.

Dialogue

Ken: Your Slack messages start with "Hi Priya, hope you're well" and end with "Best, Jay". To Priya. Who sits next to you.

Jay: Habit from email. Is it that bad?

Ken: You're way too proper, man. Just type the question.

Jay: Says the guy who has never once used an emoji. If I'm way too proper, you're way too square.

Ken: "Square"? That's my dad's word.

Jay: Exactly why it fits. Fine, from Monday the greetings go; the "thanks" stays.

You're way too proper. —

**Way too**는 회화에서 "too"를 강조하므로 "you're way too proper"는 "좀 풀어져"라는 가벼운 놀림이지 칭찬도 모욕도 아니다. "way too proper"는 술자리에서 친구나 가까운 동료에게 하고, 회사 피드백에서는 "a bit formal"이라고 한다.

대화

Ken: 네 Slack 메시지는 "Hi Priya, hope you're well"로 시작해서 "Best, Jay"로 끝나더라.

Jay:

Ken:

Ken: "square"?

"Says the guy who has never once used an emoji."
"If I'm way too proper, you're way too square."
