Who prices Samsung on a Sunday? — the hours column is the oracle's real product

Pyth's weekly deployment ships Shein's HK listing, Amazon and Samsung indices, S&P futures and palladium — and every symbol carries an hours class: Regular, Extended, 24/5, 24/7. That column is the interesting part. A crypto oracle never had to ask when a price means something; equities close. The price it serves after the bell is not a report but a methodology decision, and every DeFi protocol consuming the feed inherits that decision silently.

Not yet scoped — the experiment is one weekend long. Watch a close. Subscribe to a Pyth US-equity feed and its 24/5 Pyth Index sibling (e.g. AMZN vs. PYTH AMZN 24) across Friday close → Monday open. Log price, confidence interval, and publish cadence for both. The questions: what does the regular feed publish after the bell — last print, widened confidence, or silence? And what does the synthetic index track through the weekend — futures basis, related listings, nothing? Measure the open gap. Compare Monday's first primary print against each feed's last weekend value. The distribution of that gap is the risk any protocol carries when it values collateral off-hours — a number, not an opinion. Write the consumer rule. For a lending or perp protocol: under which hours class may this feed trigger a liquidation? The honest answer is a policy table (per class, per action), which is the same deliverable as rpc-view-not-consensus's confidence policy — one layer up the stack. Why

A crypto oracle grew up in a market with no closing bell, and its move into TradFi symbols imports a concept it never needed: time. BTC at 3 a.m. has a live order book; Samsung at 3 a.m. Seoul time on a Sunday has none. Whatever number the oracle serves in that gap is manufactured — last close, futures-implied, a synthetic index over related instruments — and each choice has failure modes the consumer never sees in the API. The 12 new "Pyth Indices" at 24/5 are precisely this manufacturing made explicit: derived prices for hours when the primary market is dark, which is what stock perps and tokenized equities need to exist at all. the-index-is-an-ops-manual applies wholesale — off-hours pricing is an index, and an index is a methodology plus accountability, not a number.

This is the same story as the death of the close, told from the supply side. incumbent-lists-the-wrapper noted that LSE 24 removes the daily fixing that funds and derivatives settle on; Pyth is building the other half — prices for hours no exchange serves. Between them the reference price stops being an exchange artifact and becomes a vendor product. And that is also the business reading: Pyth Pro ("the price of everything") is an oracle turning into a market-data vendor, walking into the most licensing-fortified cartel in finance with first-party publisher data. The moat it attacks is not technical — it is Bloomberg's contract stack.

For a consumer the risk sits exactly where the convenience is. A 24/5 feed lets a protocol liquidate against Samsung on Sunday; it also means the liquidation fires on a manufactured price whose thin inputs can gap violently at the real open. The rule that survives: map every action (UI display, funding, margin call, liquidation) to a minimum hours class and confidence — the exact discipline rpc-view-not-consensus demands for chain reads, now applied to the priced world.

How it works

The hours classes in this deployment

Class Examples shipped What a price means there
Regular Hours HK equities (Shein 0625), palladium PDZ6 Live only while the venue trades
Extended Hours US equities (subset) Thin book; wider truth intervals
24/5 12 Pyth Indices — AMZN, META, ORCL, PLTR, SAMSUNG… Manufactured off-hours: a methodology, not a print
24/7 Crypto pairs The native case — always a live book

Off-hours pricing: the menu and its failure modes

Method Serves Fails when
Last close, frozen Honesty about staleness Consumers treat it as current
Futures-implied A live, hedgeable proxy Basis moves for its own reasons
Synthetic index over related listings Weekend continuity (ADRs, futures, FX) Thin inputs; correlations break in stress
Silence / no feed Discipline Protocols that need some number improvise worse

The consumer policy table (the PoC's deliverable)

Action Minimum hours class Extra condition
UI display Any Show the class and age
Funding calculation 24/5 index Confidence below threshold
Margin call Regular/Extended live Two-source agreement
Liquidation Live primary market only — or accept the open-gap risk explicitly Written into the protocol's docs

What to remember

  1. After the bell, a price is a decision; the hours column tells you whose.
  2. Off-hours pricing is an index — methodology plus accountability (the-index-is-an-ops-manual).
  3. The business story: an oracle attacking market data's licensing cartel with first-party publishers.
  4. Convenience and risk co-locate: 24/5 enables Sunday liquidations and Monday-open gap losses.

Where it lands in Jayverse

  • Verex: attach an hours class to every price feed. Any market that can be priced off official trading hours needs a Regular/Extended/24-5/24-7 field on its feed, and liquidation or resolution should only fire on a live primary market unless the open-gap risk is written into the market's own docs.
  • Verex: adopt the consumer policy table. Map each action (display, funding, margin call, liquidation) to a minimum hours class and confidence threshold before wiring any TradFi-symbol market, the same discipline as the reference-rate rule from the Kaiko item.
  • Auditor: require the off-hours methodology in writing before the first market resolves against it. Whether the feed uses last close, futures-implied, or a synthetic index, publish which one and why before any consumer relies on it.

Extended Hours
24/5 Pyth Indices 12종 — AMZN, META, ORCL, PLTR, SAMSUNG…

마진콜 Regular/Extended 라이브 2개 소스 일치

Jayverse
