Why
Price can move on almost no volume. A single market order in a thin order book can print a large percentage change that nobody else agreed to trade at. If you read only price, you cannot tell a breakout from a fluke, or a bottom from a temporary air pocket. Volume is the second dimension that answers "how many participants agreed with this move." Skipping it is the classic beginner mistake: drawing a trend line, seeing price cross it, and buying the "breakout" without checking whether anyone traded there. Most false breakouts share one signature: low volume.
How it works
The volume bar and relative volume
Each bar's height is the total volume traded during that candle's period (one bar per 1-minute candle on a 1-minute chart, one per day on a daily chart, and so on). A single bar's height means little alone; what matters is relative volume, today's bar compared with a recent average. The common default is the 20-bar (or 20-day, on a daily chart) average, plotted as a moving average line on the volume pane. A bar at 2 to 3 times the 20-bar average is a strong signal; a bar under the average is unremarkable, even if the candle itself looks dramatic.
- Rule of thumb: a breakout candle below its 20-bar average volume is suspect and often fails or gets retested.
- Rule of thumb: two or three closes in a row with rising volume beats one big spike.
Volume confirms price, and warns at extremes
A healthy trend shows volume expanding on moves in the trend direction and contracting on pullbacks. A breakout from a range or a support/resistance level should come with a volume bar clearly above average; without it, treat the level as untested. At the other extreme, climax volume, an unusually large bar, often the largest in weeks, at the end of a sharp move, frequently marks exhaustion rather than continuation: a blow-off top or a capitulation bottom, where the last buyers or sellers get flushed out and the move reverses. Between these events, volume typically dries up during consolidation and tight ranges as participants wait; a long stretch of below-average volume usually precedes the next expansion, not a direction.
Volume is venue-specific in crypto, and VWAP is the day's fair price
Unlike a listed stock with one primary exchange, a crypto pair trades on dozens of exchanges with no consolidated tape. The volume bar on a TradingView chart reflects only the venue behind that symbol, and crypto volume is well documented to be partly inflated by wash trading, especially on smaller or unregulated exchanges, so a thin venue's "high" volume can be meaningless. Pick a large spot exchange (Binance, Coinbase, Bitstamp) before reading anything into the bars. For intraday work, VWAP (volume-weighted average price) is the running average price weighted by volume since the session opened; institutions use it as the day's fair-price benchmark, with price above VWAP favoring buyers and below favoring sellers.
On TradingView
The Volume indicator is on by default on many layouts as a pane under the price chart; if missing, open the indicator search (the fx icon or Alt+I) and add Volume. In its settings, enable MA to plot the 20-period average volume line, the default length; change the type (SMA, EMA) or length there too. Add VWAP the same way; it plots as a line on the price pane, resetting each session by default. To check which venue you are looking at, click the symbol name at the top left; the exchange shows before the ticker (for example BINANCE:BTCUSDT), and switching venues is one click away. Volume Profile (including Visible Range, which shows volume by price level instead of by time) needs a paid plan; on the free plan it shows grayed out.
Where it lands in Jayverse
- Number: no reading calls a move confirmed without a relative-volume check. A research note that says "breakout" should state the volume bar's ratio to its 20-bar average; below 1x is a caveat, not a footnote.
- Verex: resolution and reference rates need a real venue, not a thin one. The same wash-trading risk that inflates a chart's volume bar can inflate a naive last-price resolution source; prefer a named high-volume venue.
- The Auditor: "which venue, how much volume" is a checkable rule. For any market maker or resolution logic that reads an exchange price, log the venue and recent volume so the check is reproducible.
- alice-tech daily report: climax-volume language is a flag worth carrying forward. When a briefing describes a parabolic move or a crash, note whether volume was called climactic; same pattern, in prose instead of a chart.
Verified and unverified
Verified, standard and TradingView-documented: volume bars represent traded size per period, the Volume indicator's built-in moving average defaults to 20 periods, VWAP is volume-weighted average price reset per session, Volume Profile Visible Range is a paid-plan feature, and wash trading on crypto exchanges is well documented. Unverified or rule-of-thumb: the specific multiples (2-3x average for a "strong" breakout) are trader convention, not a fixed threshold, and "climax volume" as a reversal signal is a classical pattern-reading heuristic, not a statistically guaranteed outcome.
