Why
Beginners size a position by conviction and place a stop by comfort, a dollar loss they can tolerate. Both fail the same way: a comfort stop sits inside normal price noise and gets hit before the trade is actually wrong, and a conviction-sized position has no fixed relationship to the account, so one outsized loss erases many small wins. Setting the stop where structure would have to break, then sizing from that distance, removes both failure modes at once.
How it works
Stop placement: beyond structure, not at a number
"Structure" is a level the chart defines: a swing low or high, a support or resistance zone (reversed more than once), or the extreme of the candle that triggered the trade. A long stop sits a small buffer below the nearest swing low or support zone; a short stop sits above the nearest swing high or resistance zone. The buffer matters because price often wicks slightly past a level before continuing, loosely called a stop hunt; a stop placed exactly at the level gets caught by that wick. A round-number stop is chosen for being easy to remember, not because the chart broke there, and heavy order clustering makes it more likely to be touched and reversed.
Position size: risk ÷ distance to stop
Decide the account risk in dollars first (1% of a $10,000 account is $100), then divide by the price distance from entry to stop. A $2 stop on a $50 entry gives 50 units ($100 ÷ $2); a $10 stop on the same setup gives only 10 units. Two setups with equal conviction but different stop distances should never carry the same size: the wider stop always means the smaller size, so a loss on either costs the same fixed 1%.
R multiples, expectancy, and moving the stop only in favour
The dollar amount risked is 1R. A target twice as far from entry as the stop is a 2R winner; a stopped-out trade is -1R. For a 1:2 reward-to-risk system with a 40% win rate, expectancy per trade is:
(0.40 × 2R) − (0.60 × 1R) = 0.80R − 0.60R = +0.20R per trade
Positive even though the system loses 6 of 10 trades, because the two winners each pay back twice what the six losers cost; breakeven win rate at 1:2 is 33.3%, so 40% clears it. A 60% win rate at 1:1 gives the identical +0.20R edge, same math, different feel. The only rule for moving a set stop: toward entry or further into profit as the trade works, never into more risk to "give it room." A stop that only tightens caps the loss at 1R and locks in gains; one widened after entry breaks the math above.
On TradingView
Draw the trade before entering with the Long Position tool (Short Position for shorts), in the left toolbar's drawing tools, grouped with the prediction/measurement tools. Drag from the entry price; it draws entry, target and stop lines with price and percent distance labeled. Open its settings, enter Account Size and Risk (%), and it computes Quantity and Profit/Risk Ratio automatically, so R:R and units are read off the chart, not by hand. Set an Alert on the stop and target lines instead of watching the chart: right-click the line, Add Alert, condition Crossing, trigger Once Per Bar Close so a wick mid-bar doesn't fire a false alert (Alt+A opens the dialog directly). Practice risk-free in Replay mode (Alt+R): step bar by bar, place 20 practice setups, and journal each stop, target, R:R and outcome; the free plan's replay range is shorter than paid but fits 20 setups. Save the finished layout with Save so the same chart loads next session.
Where it lands in Jayverse
- Number: readings that imply a trade should carry R, not just a direction. State the invalidation level and resulting R multiple, not just "long" or "short," so a reader can size it the same way.
- Verex: market-making spreads are an expectancy bet, not a certainty bet. The market maker profits like a 40%-win 1:2 system, small edge repeated often; spread and inventory limits are its version of a stop beyond structure.
- The Auditor: log the stop rule, not just the trade. An auditable record should show the structural level a stop was set against, extending "what was checked, by which rule" to risk.
- Theory: expectancy is the same arithmetic as VaR work. The +0.20R-per-trade calculation is the expected-value reasoning behind volatility and VaR items; worth cross-linking rather than re-deriving.
Verified and unverified
Verified: stops beyond structural levels, sizing as risk divided by stop distance, and the R-multiple/expectancy formula are standard trading-risk concepts in classic references. TradingView's position tool computing quantity and R:R from Account Size/Risk %, Alert's Crossing condition and Once Per Bar Close, Bar Replay, and layout saving are documented features. Unverified or rule-of-thumb: "1% of account" is a convention, not a TradingView rule; exact hotkeys and the free plan's replay lookback can shift with plan tiers, so the menu path is the reliable fallback.
