Why
Beginners tend to read a single candle for meaning that only a pattern of candles, in context, can actually provide. A long lower wick by itself is not "bullish"; a doji by itself is not "reversal." Treating one candle as a signal instead of as one data point in a sequence is the single most common beginner mistake in chart reading, and it is the direct cause of mistaking random noise for a plan. Getting OHLC and body-vs-wick right first is what lets every later concept, support, resistance, indicators, sit on solid ground instead of a misreading.
How it works
OHLC: the four numbers in one shape
- Open — the first traded price in the candle's timeframe.
- High — the highest price reached during that timeframe.
- Low — the lowest price reached during that timeframe.
- Close — the last traded price when the timeframe ends.
The body is the rectangle between open and close; its color shows which one was higher. The wicks (or shadows) are the thin lines reaching up to the high and down to the low. A candle with a long wick and a small body shows real price rejection: the market pushed to a level and was pushed back before the period closed. A candle with almost no wick and a large body shows the market moved in one direction and stayed there, with little disagreement.
What a candle's timeframe means
Each candle summarizes one interval, 1 minute, 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, whichever you pick from the timeframe selector at the top of the chart. Switching from 1D to 1W is not just zooming out; TradingView recomputes every candle by aggregating that week's actual trades into one new open, high, low and close. A pattern on a daily chart and the same-looking pattern on a 5-minute chart are not the same amount of information: a higher timeframe (HTF) candle averages out noise that a lower timeframe (LTF) candle shows in full. Rule of thumb: a shape on a higher timeframe carries more weight than the identical shape on a lower one, because it summarizes far more trading underneath it.
Patterns that mean nothing without location and volume
- Doji — open and close are almost equal, so the body is tiny or a flat line; it shows indecision between buyers and sellers for that period, not a direction.
- Pin bar / hammer — a small body with a long wick on one side (the bottom, for a hammer); price was pushed hard one way and rejected back before the close.
- Engulfing — a two-candle pattern where the second candle's body fully covers the first candle's body in the opposite color; it shows one side taking control from the other.
None of these mean anything by themselves. The same shape in the middle of an empty range is noise; the same shape sitting on a level price has already tested twice, a support or resistance level, is a different claim about the same picture, and the same shape on an above-average volume bar is a different claim again from one printed on light volume. Location and volume are what turn a candle shape into a hypothesis worth writing down; without them it is decoration.
On TradingView: candle types, the OHLC legend, and the crosshair
- Chart type — the candle-icon button in the top toolbar opens the list of chart types.
Candlesis the standard filled-body candlestick, color set by close versus open.Hollow Candlesencodes two facts at once: outline color shows up versus the previous candle's close, and hollow-or-filled shows close versus this candle's own open.Heikin Ashiplots smoothed candles computed from averages of neighboring candles; it makes trends easier to see, and for exactly that reason it hides the real traded prices. Its O, H, L, C values are not what actually traded, so do not read wicks or exact levels off a Heikin Ashi chart for order placement or anything resolution-related. - OHLC legend — the top-left corner of the chart shows O, H, L, C plus the change and percent change, for whichever candle the cursor is over, or the latest closed candle otherwise; what it shows is configurable from the chart's settings gear.
- Crosshair — the cursor-mode icon at the bottom-right of the chart switches between the default arrow and the crosshair; with it active, hovering any candle updates the OHLC legend and a price/time readout on the axes, so exact values are readable without clicking.
Where it lands in Jayverse
- Number: chart literacy is the entry cost of every reading. Before a Number reading references "a doji at resistance" or "an engulfing move," the location and volume behind it need to be stated explicitly, not left for the reader to assume from a screenshot.
- Verex: a candle's close is a venue print, not a resolution price. The close shown in a TradingView candle is that feed's aggregated last trade for the period; a Verex market that resolves on price still needs a named reference rate with administrator and methodology, or an explicit statement of which raw venue price is used, the same distinction the Kaiko item already made.
- Auditor: "doji at support" is a claim, not a fact, until the rule is written down. What counts as "at support," how many prior touches, and what counts as "above-average volume" should be stated as the checked rule, the same instinct the Auditor row already applies to price feeds.
- Theory and alice-tech: OHLC is the raw material, not a separate topic. The close-to-close values in this item's C are literally the inputs to the log-return and volatility calculations in the Theory math items; this item is the reading-level companion to that math.
Verified and unverified
Verified: the definitions of open, high, low, close, body and wick, the meaning of doji, hammer/pin bar and engulfing patterns, and the existence and behavior of TradingView's Candles, Hollow Candles and Heikin Ashi chart types, the OHLC legend and the crosshair cursor mode are standard and documented in TradingView's own Help Center and in classic technical-analysis references. Unverified, or rule of thumb: exact thresholds for "above-average volume," how many prior touches make a level "support," and how much extra weight a higher-timeframe pattern deserves over a lower-timeframe one are conventions and rules of thumb, not fixed rules, and different traders and texts state them differently.
