Rometty on resilience — feed the network before the crisis, then control what you can and box what you can't
Ginni Rometty, IBM's first woman chair and CEO (2012–2020) and author of *Good Power*, lays out resilience in a roughly four-minute Big Think+ Leadership Lessons clip as resting on two pillars: relationships and attitude (00:00–00:31). Her claim: there is no straight line to anything worth doing (00:11), and resilience is simply always finding a way forward — the core of what she calls good power (00:24). Relationships supply perspective and energy in a crisis (00:41), but only if the network is wide and diverse enough to act as an honest mirror (01:13–01:23); it is built on what you give, not what you get, and pays back at decisive moments in unexpected ways (00:51–01:05). Attitude she illustrates through her mother: left in a garage with no money, food or home, four children in her early thirties, and an abusive remark from the father who left (01:40–02:01) — the mother refused to be a victim, never cried in front of the kids, enrolled in night classes at a community college feeling "like a fool" next to younger students, learned a skill and moved up job by job (02:08–02:28), landing on: "No one will ever define who you are but yourself" (02:35). Three mechanisms close the talk: control what you can control, compartmentalize the rest into a box you set aside, and let conviction about the destination be contagious enough to carry the organization (02:42–03:46).
For Jayverse this reframes three habits already in use as psychology rather than process. Compartmentalizing — make a plan, put it in a box, set it aside, move on — is close to word-for-word the discipline behind the learning-greed-with-no-time item and Tech #62's boundary file: capture it, stop rehearsing it in your head, close the loop. "Control what you can control" is the same posture the Auditor is built on: verify the rule you can check, not the market you can't. And a network built on what you give is the mechanism behind writing Knowledge Notes in public in alice — the asset that shows up, unprompted, when an interviewer or future colleague needs an honest read on how you think.
Why
Rometty's structure names two failure modes and gives a mechanism for each, instead of the usual advice to "be resilient." The first is holding every open problem live in your head at once — the plan not started, the fight not won, the outcome you can't control — and spending equal attention on all of it; the fix is to sort the controllable (her headband example: hair in your eyes, wear a headband, ignore the fashion opinions) from the rest, and box the rest so it stops running in the background (02:52–03:20). The second is building a network only when you need one, asking before you've ever given, which fails exactly when tested, since reciprocity must exist before the crisis, not get improvised during it. Attitude without a network is stoicism that burns out alone; a network without attitude just widens the audience for a bad plan.
How it works
Relationships: the network as an honest mirror, funded before you need it
A network earns its keep in a crisis by giving you perspective and energy you can't generate alone (00:41). That only works if it's wide and diverse — people outside your own function, company or field — since a narrow network just echoes what you already believe; a wide one acts as an honest mirror (01:13–01:23). You fund it by giving first, and it returns the investment at decisive moments, usually in a form you didn't expect (00:51–01:05).
Attitude: her mother's story as the proof case
The garage, the four children, the abusive remark set the floor: no money, no food, no home, no straight line back to anything (01:40–02:01). What made the difference wasn't the circumstances but two choices — refuse the victim role, never let the kids see her cry — plus one concrete action: night classes at a community college, felt "like a fool" next to younger students, kept going, learned a skill, moved up one job at a time (02:08–02:28). The lesson is not "stay positive," it's a claim about authorship: "No one will ever define who you are but yourself" (02:35).
Three mechanisms: control, box, conviction
Control what you can control. Most of a bad situation is uncontrollable; pick the piece that isn't (the headband, not the runway) and act on only that piece (02:52–03:03).
Compartmentalize. Make a plan, put it in a box, set the box aside, move on — the alternative is carrying every open loop live, which overloads under stress (03:10–03:20).
Conviction is contagious. Certainty about where you're headed is visible to everyone around you, and it's what lets an organization borrow your resilience instead of needing its own (03:20–03:46).
Where it lands in Jayverse
Life: filed next to learning-greed-with-no-time, Santos, Herjavec and Djokovic (1309). Compartmentalize is the same move as the learning item's "capture and stop rehearsing"; put it next to Santos's dashboard/time-affluence rules and Herjavec's "responsibility to be heard" as four angles on one resilience playbook.
Knowledge Notes: the "box" is a filed item, not an open tab. Writing something down — an item, a commit message, a note — is the mechanical form of Rometty's box: it closes the loop so the problem stops costing live attention.
Verex / Auditor: "control what you can control" is the Auditor's whole stance. The Auditor states what was checked, by which rule — the rule is the headband, the market is the fashion opinions it doesn't chase.
Eng: the "tell me about a setback" answer, in plan-box-move-on shape. Situation, refusal to be a victim, one concrete action (a skill, a job), the line "no one defines you but yourself" — a usable template for a dev/team-lead interview abroad.
Verified and unverified
Verified on 2026-09-19: Ginni Rometty was IBM's chair and CEO from 2012 to 2020, its first woman in the role; her book Good Power (Harvard Business Review Press, 2023) tells the story of her mother being left in a garage and includes the "no one will ever define who you are but yourself" framing; Big Think+ publishes short Leadership Lessons interview segments in this format. Taken from the summary and not independently checked: the exact wording and timestamps of the quotes as spoken in this specific video, the ~4-minute runtime, and whether each line is verbatim from the video or a close paraphrase carried over from the book's telling.
Jayverse
Life: learning-greed-with-no-time, Santos, Herjavec, Djokovic(1309) 옆에 정리.
