Why

The mechanism is genuine; the discipline is separating it from its packaging. The paper models automation inside a polity: decentralized automation raises capital's income share, which raises the odds of a successful revolt, so an owner-state chooses among regulating automation, redistributing through taxes, or paying for repression. Its result is a complementarity between automation and repression — and unless the revolt threat is weak or the capital stock low, the state prefers repression, which then makes room for more automation. 'Not because anyone is evil, but because it costs less' is a fair gloss of that equilibrium.

What the viral post did is the part to flag. It kept the mechanism but bolted on two distortions: 'mathematically proved AI will destroy democracy' (a model gives conditional results; it does not prove an outcome) and a marketing close ('that is why I wrote the guide below'). Same failure this catalogue keeps finding — a real signal wrapped to sell, provenance separable from truth (op-return-is-a-shared-state-channel). For Economics / jayverse-number the reusable idea is the cost comparison itself: redistribution versus control as competing expenses, and how capital accumulation moves which one is cheaper.

How it works

The mechanism (as the paper models it)

Automation → capital's share of income up → inequality up → probability of a successful revolt up → the owner-state weighs its options:

Result: a complementarity between automation and repression — as capital accumulates, control gets cheaper relative to sharing, so above a threshold the capitalist state prefers repression, which then permits further automation. Pushed far, democracy itself becomes an expense the owners would shed.

What the viral post added (flag it)

Two distortions on a real paper: 'mathematically proved AI will destroy democracy' (the paper shows a conditional complementarity, not a proven outcome) and a 'buy my guide' close. The mechanism is citable; the certainty and the sales hook are not the paper. Provenance separable from truth — the same axis as op-return-is-a-shared-state-channel.
