Why this conversation
An artery carries blood away from the heart; veins carry it back. Hence "a blocked artery", "hardening of the arteries". The second sense is a main road, river or rail line that a city depends on — "a main artery into the city" — and the adjective for that is "arterial", as in an arterial road.
