Why do you want to leave Korea?

Final-round interview with the VP of Engineering at a Stockholm payments company. The question is friendly and dangerous: "Why leave a good job in Seoul for this?" Any answer that criticises the current employer, the country, or the culture reads as a flight risk. Any answer that is only "for the experience" reads as a tourist.

Why this conversation

The motivation question is where candidates abroad most often disqualify themselves, by being too honest about the past or too vague about the future. The answer that works is specific about the work, generous about the past, and clear that the move is a decision already made.

Dialogue

Erik: You have a senior role, a team, a good company. Why leave Seoul for this?

Jay: Three reasons, and none of them is that something's wrong at home. First, the problem: I've built settlement for one currency and one regulator. You settle in eleven currencies under two regimes, and that's the version of the problem I want to be good at, and I can't learn it where I am.

Erik: Fair. Second?

Jay: The team shape. I've led five engineers who sit next to me. Your team is fourteen across three countries. Leading people I can't tap on the shoulder is a skill I don't have yet, and I'd rather learn it in a company that's already good at it than invent it alone.

Erik: And third?

Jay: Third is personal, and I'll be direct so you can weigh it. My partner and I decided two years ago that we'd live and work abroad while our daughter is young enough to grow up bilingual. We've saved for it, we've looked at three cities, and Stockholm is our first choice. So this isn't a job I'd take to see if I like Europe. It's the job I'd take because the decision to move is already made.

Erik: What would make you go back?

Jay: A family emergency. Nothing on the work side that I can foresee. And if you're asking about the two-year cliff most relocations hit, I know about it, we've planned for it, and I'd rather you ask me about it than not.

Erik: I was going to.

Jay: Then I've saved you a question. What's the one you'd ask next?

Erik:

Erik:

Erik:

Erik:

"Three reasons, and none of them is that something's wrong at home."
"one currency and one regulator… eleven currencies under two regimes."
"the decision to move is already made… we've saved… three cities… first choice." 그리고 우려를 먼저 꺼낸다("the two-year cliff").
